About Us
My name is Liesbeth Depoorter, I am the President
of Out of Brussels, Antiques & Artwork,
Inc.
I am a native of Belgium, my home country, where I also graduated as
an Attorney at Law from the University of Leuven (KUL). I practiced
Law in Belgium for 3 years.
Together with my husband, I moved to the USA in 1997 and we have lived in Greensboro
since then.
Antiques and Art have always been fascinating to me and I decided to found
a business from my passion. Out of Brussels, Antiques & Artwork, Inc. was
incorporated in 2001. We have come to affectionately refer to our company as "Out
of Brussels".
Our complete product portfolio consists of well-priced English and continental
majolica, transferware pieces, 16th-19th century paintings,
as well as contemporary paintings from selected upcoming artists.
This website however centers exclusively around majolica, since it represents
the largest segment of our business.
However, if you are looking for anything in particular, or if you are more interested
in our other products, please let us know by e-mail. Through the vast network of relations that we have built over the years since starting this business, there is a good chance we either have, or can find the items of interest to you.
We are also always interested in starting new adventures, aimed at expanding
our product portfolio of exciting and quality products. Please, tell
us about the products you believe we should add to our offerings,
or if YOU have products for sale.
Going
back to majolica specifically, Out of Brussels specializes in continental
majolica for different reasons.
-
With
our roots in Belgium, we are most familiar with the continental
majolica, especially with pieces by Nimy-lez-Mons and Wasmuel,
the two top Belgian majolica producers. We buy most of our merchandise
directly in Europe, primarily Belgium, France, Germany and England.
-
Nimy-lez-Mons produced
refined pieces, such as pitchers, planters, vases, umbrella
stands, and asparagus items, thereby using the same clay as
some of the French manufacturers and often using similar designs.
-
Wasmuel on
the other hand, has a very distinctive look. The use of cobalt
blue in almost every piece, the unusual designs and patterns
and the often uneven backgrounds (dots, flowers, stripes) sets
their pieces apart from all other majolica and makes a lot
of collectors go wild for them.
-
It
is also our opinion that continental majolica proportionally offers
more value than the usually very expensive English pieces, which
is a relief and an incentive for every beginning collector.
-
Although
the basic manufacture of continental pieces was the same as in
England, the continental glazes are often more shiny and the colors
more vibrant. The use of deep red, teal, blue and pink, is often
less familiar to beginning collectors.
Should
you have any other questions about our business or products, please
don't hesitate to contact us. We will
be happy to assist in any way we can.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon, or to meeting you at our booth
See you there.
